Frequently Asked Questions

How many items should be on a coffee table?

As a general styling rule, three to five items is the sweet spot for most coffee tables, enough to add personality and function without it feeling cluttered. A well-balanced arrangement usually mixes:

One anchor piece - a large book, a tray, or a bowl
One or two functional items - coasters, remotes tucked into a tray, or a candle
One decorative touch
- a small plant, a vase, or an object with texture or height

Odd numbers and varying heights tend to look more natural than a symmetrical, matched set. Using a tray to group smaller items is also an easy way to keep things tidy while still displaying what you love.

Because our coffee tables are handmade from solid ash with a substantial, tactile finish, they're designed to hold their own even when styled simply. A charred or blackened ash top especially doesn't need to be dressed heavily to make a statement in a room.

Should coffee table be higher or lower than a sofa?

Generally, a coffee table should sit slightly lower than the arm of your sofa, ideally within 5-7cm below or level with the seat cushion height. This keeps the table easy to reach from a seated position without dominating the room or interrupting the sightline across it.

Most sofa seat heights fall between 40-45cm, so a coffee table height of around 40-45cm typically works well as a starting point, though this can vary depending on your sofa's proportions and how low you like to sit.

As every table we make is handmade to order in our country workshop, height isn't fixed to a single standard size. If you have a specific sofa in mind and want to make sure the proportions work in your space, get in touch via our quote form and we can advise on the right dimensions before you order.

Do coffee tables make a room look smaller?

The right sized table, for your sofa and floor space, will anchor the seating area and making a room feel more finished and considered. Modern Rustic coffee tables are statement-sized to feel bold and be a centrepiece of the room.

People often choose a table roughly two-thirds the length of a sofa, opting for a lighter finish, like natural or white solid ash, in smaller or darker rooms, where a heavier charred or blackened tone can visually shrink the space if the table is oversized.

However, sizing up where you can will make the table the visual centrepiece of the room and allowing you to create a well designed and individual look with artefacts and books. This often gives a room more style and personality.

Because all our tables are custom-made, you're not restricted to a handful of fixed sizes. If your room is on the smaller side, we can help you find or make a size that fits comfortably, or work with you to create just the right length or width for your room shape, size and furniture.

What is the 2/3 rule for coffee tables?

The 2/3 rule is a simple guideline for choosing a coffee table that's in proportion with your sofa. It suggests the length of your coffee table should be around two-thirds the length of your sofa, so it feels balanced rather than dwarfed by it or overpowering it.

For example, a 200cm sofa would typically pair well with a coffee table around 140cm in length. It's a useful starting point, but not a strict rule; room layout, walking space, and how you use the table day to day all matter too. As all our coffee tables are individually handmade to order, we're happy to talk through sizing based on your sofa's dimensions to make sure the proportions feel right before anything is made. Simply send us a message with your sofa and room dimensions and we'll work with you to land on the right fit.
