Frequently Asked Questions

What is the 4 inch rule for dining seating?

The 4 inch rule for dining seating is a simple spacing guideline used to work out how many chairs comfortably fit around a dining table. It recommends allowing at least 4 inches (around 10cm) of clear space between each seated diner, so elbows aren't bumping and everyone can pull their chair in and out with ease.

To use it, measure the usable seating length of your table (usually just the straight edges, not curved corners), then divide by the width of each chair plus the 4 inch gap. As a general guide, most dining chairs need around 60-65cm of width per person once you've factored this in.

At The Modern Rustic, every dining table is handmade to order, so if you're torn between two sizes, our team can talk you through exactly how many will fit comfortably based on the chairs or bench you're planning to pair it with. For a quick reference, our size guide shows the seating capacity for each of our standard table lengths.

Should dining tables and chairs match?

Not necessarily. While a matching table and chair set gives a neat, coordinated look, some of the best dining spaces come from mixing pieces with a shared tone rather than an identical finish. A solid ash table in a natural, blackened, or white finish can work beautifully with chairs in a contrasting wood, painted finish, or upholstered seat, as long as the proportions and overall style feel considered.

What matters more than an exact match is consistency in quality and character. Because our tables are individually handmade in our local workshop using premium, sustainably sourced timber and UK-manufactured steel, they're built to sit at the centre of a room rather than disappear into a matching set. Pairing a Modern Rustic table with a bench on one side and chairs on the other, for example, is a popular way to add variety without it looking mismatched.

Are dining benches a good idea?

Yes, benches are a great addition to a dining space, and one of the reasons they're such a popular pairing with our tables. They tend to seat more people per metre than individual chairs, tuck neatly under the table when not in use to free up floor space, and work particularly well for family homes, growing children, or anyone who entertains regularly.

Our benches are individually handmade to order in a variety of custom lengths, in the same natural, blackened, or white solid ash finishes as our dining tables, with matching black or custom colour industrial steel legs. Many customers choose one bench alongside chairs on the opposite side, which adds visual interest while still giving everyone a proper, comfortable seat.

Benches aren't just a practical choice either. Paired with the right table, they lend a relaxed, sociable feel that suits the modern rustic look, without compromising on durability. As with all our furniture, ours are made from dense, slow-grown timber and planed with a square edge for a clean, contemporary finish. Browse our bench collection to see the options available.

What is a good sized dining table for 4 people?

For comfortable seating for four, a table between 100cm and 120cm in length is generally the right size. This range gives each person enough room either side without chairs feeling cramped, while still keeping the table compact enough for smaller dining rooms or kitchens.

As a rule of thumb for seating at our tables:

100cm-120cm seats 2 to 4
140cm-160cm
seats 4 to 6
180cm-200cm seats 6 to 8
220cm-240cm seats 8 to 10

The exact fit will depend on the size of the chairs or bench you're using alongside it, so if you're planning something outside our standard range, or want to check a size will work in your space, send us a message and we'll get straight back to you with guidance.

How to choose a custom dining table?

Choosing a custom dining table starts with three things: size, finish, and how you plan to use the space day to day.

Size should be led by how many people you need to seat regularly, plus a little extra for guests, and the dimensions of your room. Our size guide is a helpful starting point, but because every table we make is handmade to order, we're not limited to standard sizes. If nothing in our standard collections quite fits, we can design and build to your exact requirements, including in-between or larger-than-usual dimensions.

Finish comes down to the look you want in your space. Our solid ash tables are available in natural, blackened, or white finishes, all paired with black or custom colour industrial steel legs, so there's plenty of scope to match your existing decor or steel colour scheme.

Everyday use matters too. If you have a busy household, our dense, tightly grained timber is chosen specifically for its stability, reducing the risk of splitting or twisting over time, and every table is planed with a square edge on all sides for a clean, contemporary finish rather than an overly rustic, uneven look.Once you've got a sense of these three things, the easiest next step is to complete our bespoke request form, and we'll come back to you with a quote and any advice you need to finalise the details.
